We are SO excited to be sharing not only Blake + Katie’s wedding with you, but also their story. These two are so special to us, and we loved being the ones to document their day. Be prepared for some pretty amazing answers to our questions 🙂
Q1: Who made the first move in the relationship?
A1: Megan Avaikian. Megan is one of my (Katie’s) good friends who blatantly let my feelings be known to Blake at our mutual friends’ wedding reception. Lucky, he felt the same way. I later found out he had been been stalking me for six months. He finally asked me out the in June 2014.
Q2: Awkward first date, or awesome first date? Where was the date?
A2: Awesome! We went to Atomic Coffee in downtown Fargo. It was a rainy night in June. We talked for three hours until we had to leave because Atomic was closing.
Q3: Blake, what attributes of Katie did you fall in love with first?
A3: I really, really liked her face (and I still do), but I fell in love with her heart. I’ve never met a person more open, honest, and trusting. She is terrible at pretense and great at loving people. She is also super funny and easy to talk to, which helped me out a lot in the beginning.
Q4: Katie, what qualities of Blake did you fall in love with first?
Q4: His sincerity. Blake says what he means, and means what he says. He’s always amazed me with his ability to speak the truth. I also value his humility so much. He’s the one who always says sorry first, and he never boasts about himself or his talents. And if I were him, I would boast… he’s really hott!
Q5: When did you know that you could see yourselves spending the rest of your lives together?
A5: For both of us, it was when we took a trip to Kansas City for the IHOPKC OneThing conference about six months into our relationship. After spending that many consecutive hours in a car, you either fall in love with someone or you know it’s not going to work out. I (Katie) remember laughing and crying during that nine hour drive and thinking I had never been able to be so real with another human. I was telling him things I’d never told anyone else. We had to drive the last two hours of the trip in our own cars, and we still called each other to talk the rest of the way home.
Q6: What has been one of your favorite adventures so far together?
A6: Our honeymoon. We stayed in a cabin in Washington that we found on Air BnB. We would probably never stay there again (due to the lack of air conditioning and screens on windows), but we made some of our best memories there–singing at the top of our lungs, laughing, crying, and praying together. As bug-infested as it was, that cabin still has a special place in our hearts.
Q7: What is your favorite kind of date night?
A7: The spontaneous ones. The ones with good eats. The kinds of dates that allow us to be free to do whatever we want. The ones with no timeline and no bedtimes. The kinds of dates where we stay up late just to talk.
Q8: What advice do you have to other couples who are engaged/newly married?
A8: Engaged: Don’t get caught up in what’s on Pinterest or what someone else did at their wedding. It’s your day. Make it your own. Do the things you value and leave out the things you don’t. And on your honeymoon, we recommend putting your phones away. You don’t need the rest of the world in those few days. You have just the two of you. Don’t post to Facebook or Instagram, don’t text your maid of honor or your best man. Just be together. Just rest. Life will start up again soon enough. Newly married: Treasure every moment you have together. I (Blake) travel alot for work; and as hard as that can be sometimes, it keeps things in perspective for me. When I’m with Katie, I’m a lot less likely to fixate on our differences. I’m just thankful to be with her! So, whether you’re together every day or not– stay thankful.
Q9: What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
A9: (Blake) Seeing Katie for the first time in her dress. Not only was she the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen; she was my bride and my forever best friend. For me (Katie), it was when my dad walked me down the aisle and gave me away to the man I love. To have my dad’s approval and to know with complete certainty that I was living out God’s will for my life in that moment was really special.
Q10: Describe your wedding day in 3 words.
A10: Beautiful. Holy. Unforgettable.
